My '85 380sl failed it's smog test due to a bad cat. (HC measured 172) I live in California and have been quoted $300 up for the replacement of each cat.
1. How many catalytic converters are on a stock 380sl?
2. Are California cats better than the 49-state versions? Why do they have to be "certified for California?
3. Do I have to go to Mercedes Benz to replace my cat (cats) or can I have a muffler shop do it?
4. The cause of the bad cat was the crankcase ventilation system was clogged. So I was told. So I had the system cleaned out.
